It's been a tough period for Big Island bookstores in recent years: The Kohala Book Shop in Hawi closed its doors in January of 2009, Borders in Hilo followed in July of 2010, and finally, Borders in Kona closed in 2011. Fortunately there are still good local alternatives out there!

Here are the Big Island apps that we use and continue to have loaded on our Apple phones and tablets (compatible with iOS 12). Please note that Hawaii Revealed was formerly our hands-down favorite Big Island app but no more. An annual $17.99 (up from $7.99 in 2018) subscription (automatically renewed unless the subscription is cancelled) is now required for each island. In addition, I find that the app navigation is clunker than it was for the older non-subscription version. You've been warned.

The process for obtaining camping, A-frame shelter, and cabin permits for state and county parks on the Big Island is pretty convoluted and requires some advance planning.

There's absolutely no shortage of places to stay on the Big Island and the rangea in rental rates and types of accommodations can be stunningly broad. We don't much care for resorts and hotels and tend to favor small and simple cottages in quiet and cozy locations. We used to post a list of recommended places to stay but smartphones and apps like Airbnb have pretty much rendered that approach obsolete.

And, of course, there's the volcanoes. The May, 2018, eruption that began in Leilani Estates has destroyed hundreds of homes and diplaced many lower Puna residents but, for now, seems to have quieted down.
